Nowadays, many game companies want to introduce NFT in their games. However, many players are dissatisfied with this decision. In addition to sharing with you why players resent NFT, I will also share where the game’s NFT should be used.
NFT in the game
In the game industry, NFT has been divided into two ways, namely, NFT games specifically designed for NFT and game companies to make money through NFT. First of all, there are many NFT-based games on the market such as CryptoKitties. The player will pair two cats and give birth to a kitten, and put the kitten on the market for auction. This type of game is called GameFi with Pay 2 Earn elements.
The first game masterpiece to have NFT is the DLC Pinhead from Dead By Daylight. When it was launched, the official did not tell the players that the product would join the NFT at the first time, but only announced it after a period of time, which aroused the disgust of the players. One of the most controversial is the disappearing voice of the test server. In the test server, there is a sentence from Pinhead. However, in the official version, this sentence was removed on the grounds of a bug. Foreign players doubted whether this voice was included in the NFT, so it was removed.
Then, Ubisoft also announced their NFT plan. The plan is to add NFT content to the players’ games, and allow players to sell their own equipment. Therefore, they used Ghost Recon: Breakpoint as a test. They launched a set of NFT costumes, and players can only get this unique NFT equipment after playing for more than 600 hours. This move also caused dissatisfaction among players, and even internal employees did not understand why Ubisoft executives wanted to implant NFT in the game.
Why is NFT so hated
For some game companies, NFT is very attractive. However, NFT is really inappropriate in the game. Game companies want to join NFT because they want to make money. This approach may directly replace the current micro-transaction system. Players do not like NFT mainly because they want to protect the environment of the game. Previously, It Takes Two producer said in an interview that he would not add any NFT elements to his game, because for him, the game is a work of art.
Before NFT, micro-transactions, opening boxes, and the mechanism of krypton gold were one of the tools used by game companies to attract money. If NFT really becomes the mainstream of the game, consumers will be treated unfairly. Assuming that something is set to a high price after the NFT is implanted, it will be unfair to some players with low funds. If game developers make DLC into NFT products, the DLC will cause players to spend more money to buy because of price speculation. So many players choose to boycott NFT in order to protect the future of the game.
In fact, many game companies want to try to add NFT to their games, such as GSC Game World, the developer of Stalker 2: Chernobyl Heart. They announced that they will cooperate with DMarket to launch NFT content and introduce it into the game with the concept of meta-human. They said that NFT owners can become NPCs in the game, and there will even be more NFT content. However, they were still criticized by a group of players, so GSC Game World cancelled all NFT projects.
Game companies can enter the NFT market, as long as they don’t touch the game itself. Game companies can sell them in the form of pictures. Not only does it not affect the game itself, but it also allows the author to have enough funds to develop the game. Their concept map is something that can be used as NFT, not only to make money, but also to help the team’s artists gain exposure.
In fact, players have no opinion on NFT and respect this technology. Players just want to draw a clear line between the game and NFT-related things, and don’t want NFT to destroy the game’s community, that’s why they hate NFT so much. So, players feel that if the game company wants to engage in NFT, what method would be the best?
