Things You Didn’t Know About PlayStation 1: PlayStation Name Source, PlayStation Black Disc

As one of the three giants of the game industry, Sony PlayStation launched the original PS console in 1994. Today, this console has a history of nearly 30 years, so players will not have such a deep understanding of this console. Here I will share with you some things you didn’t know about the first generation PS console.

Father of PlayStation

The “Father of PlayStation” was a Japanese entrepreneur named Ken Kutaragi. He was President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Limited from 1993 to 2006. After he graduated, he applied to Sony to be an engineer. One day, when he saw his daughter playing Famicom at the time, he realized the potential of the game industry.

So, he secretly cooperated with Nintendo to create a better audio chip for Famicom. However, his actions were discovered by his superiors. When he presented his secret project to the CEO of Sony at the time, his invention was recognized and he began planning to develop PlayStation.

PlayStation name origin

Through the relationship of Ken Kutaragi, Sony and Nintendo worked together to launch a new game console. At the time, they were going to call the console they were working on Super Disc or Play Station. Later, Nintendo lost confidence in Sony for various reasons, so Nintendo secretly went to sign a cooperation agreement with Philips. Thus, Sony-Nintendo partnership was broken.

Since the name Play Station is still owned by Nintendo, in order to reach an agreement, Sony agreed to use the audio chip developed by Ken Kutaragi in exchange for the right to use Play Station. And just like that, Sony changed the name to PlayStation.

Another name for PlayStation

The original PS had a lot of names, some players would call it PlayStation, others would call it PS1. In addition to these, this console has a lesser-known name, which is PSX. The name comes from the codename that Sony set for this game console when it was developing the original PS.

But after a period of time, many people found it easier and neater to shorten the name to PS, so the name PSX was gradually forgotten by players.

PlayStation Black Disc

PlayStation’s game discs are designed in black, and look like vinyl records. This is also the most unique looking game disc ever made. Sony made game discs black because they thought it would prevent games from being copied.

However, this design does not have any preventive effect. Aside from its unique appearance, black game discs are basically the same as regular discs.

PlayStation’s most famous game

At the time, PlayStation’s most famous game was Gran Turismo. The game took nearly five years to develop and was released in late 1997.

Today, the game has sold a total of 10 million copies, making it the best-selling game on the original PS platform.

Black PlayStation console

In addition to the gray version of the PlayStation console, there is also a black version. This version also has its own unique name called PS1 Net Yaroze. PS1 Net Yaroze was released by Sony in 1996 for gamers who like computer programming. In addition to being able to play games like the normal version, it also has tools for programming PS games.

A black version sells for $750. Because the price is very expensive, there is no need for ordinary players to buy the black version, so it was relatively rare.

Logo on PlayStation Controller

On each generation of PlayStation controllers, you can see four symbols: square, triangle, circle, and cross symbol. These four symbols have their own meanings. The square represents the menu, the triangle represents the viewing angle, the circle represents the confirmation, and the cross is the cancellation.

This is the Japanese game company’s understanding of these buttons, but it is the opposite for European and American game companies. In the games launched by European and American game companies, the confirm button will become an interruption, and the cancel button will become a circle.

PlayStation last game

The PlayStation had about 7,918 different games on the shelves from its launch until it was discontinued. So the last game to be put on the PS platform, do players know which one it is? In the case of Japan, the last game to be released was Strike Dragon, which was launched in May 2004.

If it is North America, it is FIFA Football 2005, which was launched in October 2004. In Europe, it is the Weird Chicken Kart X, which was launched in July 2005.

The above is things players didn’t know about the original PlayStation. Are there any players that have played this console?
